Three thumbs up! :) The world of the pimpernel is quite simply—awestriking. Every book in this series has just wowed me! In this one, we have the Pimpernel, of course, and Kali (she’s super awesome in this one). Yet, they aren’t the main stars in this thrilling, spine-tingling adventure. Our hero and heroine are two new players in the game. Seba, or Sebastian, is a high stakes player, forger, and ultimately, a conman. When he gets a letter that Vic, Victoria, a world-renown model, will be killed in a week’s time unless he does something, he doesn’t know what to think. Two years ago, he kissed her…and was promptly fired from that job by her father and hasn’t seen her again. But he’s never been able to stop thinking about her. Vic’s life is run by her controlling step-dad, who seriously is a psycho. Evan Bauers gave me the shivers. But with the pimpernel and his sidekicks on the job, and enlisting Seba’s help, they may be able to not only save Vic’s life, but capture a starbreaker as well, something that hasn’t been done for over 300 years. Get ready for the ride of your life with this one. It’s pretty dang awesome.
I'm not sure how I feel about the main story being framed with scenes from other points of view. I understand why it was done, but something about it made it feel like it lacked continuity. Maybe it would have felt more natural if it was in third person, but the oddity of jumping from the Pimpernell's POV at the beginning and then having the bulk of the story from two other (new) Points of view, and then going back to his point of view for the very end pulled me out of the story a little.I liked the main characters. I thought they had a good story. The book was well written, well-paced and had some really great moments. Great villain, great action. However, I vehemently object to how the romance was left at the end. It was unsatisfying, which is the biggest reason I'm leaving off a star.I'll be interested to see where this series goes. Perhaps it will turn into Jack simply framing each book for a new set of characters.
We peek just a little further into a fictitious ubersociety that keep ours in balance with subtle, focused and amazing intervention. Great premise, story, characters and pacing. My favorite books get me pumping my fists, grinning, and admiring a protagonist's courage or brilliance (etc.). Further, any good fiction keeps me reading eagerly, and surprised by what comes next. This book delivers all of the above. To score 5 stars with me, though, a book needs a little more. I hope for interlaced and converging storylines, and this book is relatively linear. A series installment might get me daydreaming about what could have been, or impatient for the next installment. Didn't happen this time. Finally, I rely on my own guesswork (rather than a well-developed subplot or a character's revealed thoughts), to anticipate how characters who got a majority of this story's print space will figure into future installments of this series. It is frustrating to be in imaginary space that I don't know the author is in with me. I would have really liked a character who, however fleetingly, filled the role of foreshadower or storyline integrator. I want to know more about the danger that looms over our Pimpernel because of the star charts of the woman he loves, and the progress made in identifying and overcoming this danger. I'm still interested in each character introduced by previous books in the series, and would have liked more of an update on more of them in this one. That said, I am still sold on the series, and plan to buy the next book. I look forward to what comes next.
This story continues the super-world view of beings classified by playing cards as diamonds, hearts, spades, etc. of different numbers, with the royals towering over them. The Big Brother always watching surveillance is as present as before, with even the bad guys fitting in the world order in a very organized manner. Everything is rational, well thought out, well planned in advance, and the only reason Jack wins is because his planning is better than the planning of the enemy. The author does an great job keeping Kali and Jack invisible and present simultaneously.Kali is thawing out as a person by the end of the story, under Cupid's (hearts) mentorship, which leads the reader to wonder if this series will arc back to the Rhea incarnation; I miss the old best friend the most, out of the old series. The entire discussion of Kali's real and pretend zodiac signs sounds like Kali is invited to fully re-create herself as a character. Jack's love interest, Clare, is absent and missed by Jack; the story works flawlessly without her, but it would be nice to see her back too. The flashes of humanity are precious on the backdrop of this high-level surveillance world. I enjoy these well-crafted stories; they work like a delicate, precise mechanism of dancers inside a music box. They capture my full attention for the moment, as I open the box and watch them, but I find that I don't miss any of these characters when I close the box.
Through the years I have read all of Sheralyn Pratt's books. I've really enjoyed them. But this new series 'The Pimpernel' is absolutely amazing. With every book in the series I get more attached to the characters. This book, the 'Starbreaker', was wonderful. You must read these books! They are adventurous and gripping and she keeps them CLEAN. I can't wait for the next episode. Thank you Sheralyn.
