This is the third book in this series that I've read. You don't need to read them in order as they're all stand alone books, but characters from earlier books are brought up briefly in the latter ones (but they weren't imperative to the story). Having read two others, I can safely say that the books in this series follow a pretty prescriptive pattern. There is some form of unrequited love, a drama which seems to always involved another interested party or an ex that gets thrown in for friction and then everything tied up pretty neatly and uneventfully. That being said, they are easy, lighthearted books with a happy ending. This book settles the reader into the series as a bit of effort has been made by the author to mention all the attractive citizens in the town who no doubt feature in other books.This book has probably been my least favourite of the ones I've read so far. The storyline, while entertaining in parts, fell a bit flat for me overall. Cade and Amelia were hot and heavy for each other back in the day. She returned home one day to see her best friend in bed with him, naked. She refused to talk to him after that and Cade left for training as a hotshot firefighter. He was upset about her thinking he'd do that to her (it was an elaborate set up that apparently everyone knew except Amelia). Fast forward 8 or so years and Amelia has run out of her wedding to a man who just wanted her to prove he was a man who could rise to the challenge (wtf?), but didn't appreciate her for who she was. They didn't love each other, so she calls the wedding off on the day, goes to a bar and has a few drinks, gets in a fist fight with a man because she is tall (she refers to herself as Amazon-like) and low and behold, Cade is there. They reconnect and try to get over the mass amounts of hurt the author tries to press on us that they have.There were a few things in the story that frustrated me. Firstly, she has little to no memory of how her night went after Cade got her from the bar because she'd had six drinks. Righto. Another pet peeve I have with this author is the constant, repetitive language that is used not only in this book, but all the books of this series I've read. Within three pages, there is reference more than once to Amelia's 'channel' throbbing. I kid you not. I have never read so much about throbbing channels, the heroine going wet at the drop of hat, her heated core, slick heat, wet heat, etc. It was actually a turn off. There are a few typos throughout as well.I liked Cade. He was strong and affable. Amelia, on the other hand, annoyed me a bit. She jilted her ex at the altar and then got pissed that he went fishing with his brother afterwards. Apparently he should have been at home feeling sorry for himself while she was fantasizing and hooking up with her old flame. She blamed her ex for being with her when there was nothing there, but I didn't read the bit about her having a gun to her head and being made to be in a relationship with him. I also didn't really like the ending. There was this big deal made throughout the book about Cade and Amelia's past and what went wrong. Of course, the ex-friend at the heart of the problem appears out of the blue and causes problems. And then, she just drops off the face of the planet towards the end of the book, as does the ex-fiance that was wanting to get back with her. I don't understand why this was written into the book for it to literally go nowhere. They just weren't mentioned again. When the book ended, it felt a bit up in the air.So, the storyline and language are incredibly repetitive. If you haven't read the other books, this might not bother you, but it got to me by this installment. I will only read other books in the series if they're cheap.
Rules of engagement:Amelia: If you can’t get married, get drunk. If you can’t get drunk, play pool. If the guy’s a sore loser… Uh, oh. And if your ex shows up to ‘save’ you? Get mad. After all, he’s the reason you didn’t get married. It’s all his fault anyway. Just roll with it, baby. Oh, and by the way-- jumping to conclusions-- Not Good.Cade: If you can’t work fast, go slow. If you can’t go slow, work fast. To solve the Amelia conundrum, keep your wits about you. Second chances are sweet and rare. This may not be the best time to pull that strong, silent card… Oh, well. At the very least, now that you’ve got her, don’t let go.In J. H. Croix's master storyteller hands, I was immediately caught up in this story. It found that place in my heart where I believe in romance and in dreams. The backdrop of Alaska was painted with richness enough to set each scene with a flood of color, scent and sound-- and eclectic characters. It makes me want to go back there and visit again.And as Cade and Amelia worked their way through all the hurt into the truths of their relationship, finding their way back to joy, I laughed and cried with them. Second chances are so sweet. This is one of the best ones I’ve read yet. 5 stars.
Cade and Amelia dated in high school, until Amelia walked in on Cade in bed with a naked Shannon, who was supposed to be Amelia’s best friend. Seven years later, Cade is back in town and scoops Amelia, donned in a wedding dress, up off the floor after being in a bar fight. No matter that she hasn’t seen Cade in years, that she walked away from her own wedding to someone else earlier that day, or that she believes Cade betrayed her, all those old feelings are still there.I love JH Croix ’ s writing and was glad to get an advance copy of this first standalone book in her new Into the Fire series. This one had several favorite elements: second chance romance, sexy, alpha firefighter and a strong, competent heroine, so this book’s premise, storyline, hero and heroine all appealed to me. Cade and Amelia are both stubborn, which was part of their problem seven years ago, but Cade knows what he wants, and that’s Amelia. Still, when they get back together, things are a little tenuous, especially when Shannon comes back to town. I loved the story up until this point, but I was disappointed a character as independent and accomplished as Amelia wasn’t more secure. I felt like that issue really wasn’t resolved so the reader had confidence in her relationship with Cade. Seeing her put Shannon in her place would have gone a long way to prove Amelia had overcome her insecurities and that she completely trusted Cade. In spite of that, this was a great read, and I can’t wit to read the next book in the series!
This book was terrible. Let's start out with the authors inability to write a proper sentence. The grammar was so bad, and contained so many errors it was unbelievable. It totally distracted from the storyline, and was very frustrating. The storyline was weak and the characters resembled children in the way they reacted to situations. Total waste of time. Avoid it at all costs. Good thing it was free or I might have given up trying new authors. Totally disappointing. The cursing and explicit sex scenes was another mark against this poor attempt at writing. If it doesn't add to the storyline, then it's unnecessary. It felt like more of a filler because the author couldn't think of anything else. Won't be reading anything by this author again. Once was more than enough.
Honestly this was ok. It was a little repetitive. Also I felt like Amelia being tall(5'11) was this big issue and men looked at her like she was manly because of her size. I just didn't like that. Her height was brought up repeatedly. And she talked about settling her someone who didn't love her because that was all she thought she could have. I don't think I would continue with this series.
