My brother used to buy Who's Who in Baseball magazine and was devastated when they quit printing it. He plays an old board game called Big League Manager and needs the player stats for the game. I found the Bill Jane's Handbook on Amazon and got him a copy. He says it's the best book with player stats, he likes it better than the defunct Who's Who in Baseball magazine. He really enjoys reading the reports that Bill Janes writes in the book about the upcoming season.
I've purchased this book every year since 1992. Back then, there was no Fielding Bible, no shift charts, no Lord of Flies, etc. It had what I needed - lefty/righty breakdowns and minor league stats on ALL rookies. Now the book is full of charts I don't care about. And to make room for all the charts that I don't care about, they're only including minor league stats on select rookies. All of the information in this book I can look up free on the internet. But I like having in all in one book. But now it doesn't have the information I need. I won't purchase it again.
For many of the prospects, it provides minors history so you can make your own projections on MLB performance.A good tool to have prior to your fantasy draft.
All Baseball fans need this book. Even if you don't want to pour over all the stats, the essays are great.
Great for stats for fantasy league geeks.
This is a comprehensive book for the baseball nerd, but it's not for the faint of heart. A paper copy is probably preferable to a digital copy because it would be easier to reference quickly.
The Handbook continues to evolve and improve. The latest metrics give more enjoyment to the raw numbers.
