Review
With 200 pages of beautifully printed shots, Minneapolis photographer Allen Beaulieu’s Prince coffee-table book is A-U-T-O-matically definitive. Many iconic images are present and accounted for, including the covers of Dirty Mind and Controversy and their accompanying singles, plus press shots and inner-sleeve images from 1999. But what really elevates Before the Rain is an intimacy you simply can’t find anywhere else. Beaulieu, Prince’s main photographer from 1979 to 1983, catches the maestro not only hard at work and relaxing backstage but full-on goofing off; no other Prince tome has pink-hued color test shots of the Purple One with a red bandanna on his face, pretending to suck his thumb. The multi-page spread of Prince and his band before and after their notorious 1981 opening set for the Rolling Stones―during which the audience pelted them with garbage―is nearly a documentary in itself. –Michaelangelo Matos, author of The Underground Is Massive (The Best Music Books of 2018)“Allen was like another member of the band. He was the only photographer that I ever remember just hanging around with us. Prince trusted him more than anyone since, I think. Al was allowed to be around in the dressing rooms and at rehearsals. . . . He was there in beginning, and we were really close, and he was a punk like we were. I am so glad to see someone unearthing his stuff.â€Lisa Coleman“Working with Al was very natural; it flowed. The magic of how Al worked―and I think it’s the thing that really appealed to Prince―is he had a way of conducting things along without being overbearing or reducing people to action figures or something. It was very organic, and he managed to pull something out of this disparate set of human beings.â€Dez Dickerson

This is my first official Prince purchase since his death. I am glad I waited to spend my money on something that is for real Prince. After his death, a lot of people took advantage of his name and was selling everything with is name and picture attached . I guess his song Old Friends 4 Sale is coming true. But the book is awesome and the pictures and stories are fun to read and seeing how it all came to be. I miss him so, but his music is still alive.
Excellent book! Treasure trove of unseen before photographs Brings back fond memories from the height of my Prince fandom and my favorite era in his career. Does have a strong processing smell which should wane over time. Even if it weren’t on sale, would be worth every penny. Loved this, cover to coverâ¤ï¸
This book is filled with never before seen photos and highly recommended for anyone who is interested in the historical significance of Prince's early days as an artist. Bottom line; this is a must have.
Beautiful pictures, well made but the processing smell is very, very strong which is why I deducted one star. After it airs out, it should be fine. I have several books about Prince and this one contains many pictures I've never seen before. Except for the smell, I highly recommend it.
It's unbelievable to me how many never-before-seen photos there are of Prince and his bandmembers in this book! I've been a fan for 35 years, and honestly thought I'd seen them all! But there are so many great candid shots in the book, and great stories to go along with them. One of my favorites was the shot of Prince and BrownMark at the infamous Rolling Stones show where the fans booed Prince. Great insight into this amazing artist!
I can;t say enough about the beautiful pictures and stories in this book! The young Prince is truly something to behold! More pieces in the puzzle of this superbly talented and enigmatic man. Thank you Allen Beaulieu! Buy it! You won't be sorry!
What's not to like? The author, Allen Beaulieu, has created a masterpiece within Prince: Before the Rain! It is full of never before seen pictures of our Purple Yoda from Minnesota! These pictures were captured during what has become known as the most prolific era in Prince's career. The author has also added his heartfelt commentary with the pictures, which makes this book very hard to put down! If you're interested in Prince's early career you will definitely want to get this book! And of course it's a must-have for any Prince fam!!
This era of Prince is one of my favorites and I love love love how beautiful this coffee table book is! Lots of candid photos, beautiful printing.
